Men's jeans: how to choose the ideal cut and wash

Skinny, slim, straight or wide? The guide to men's jeans cuts and which wash suits each occasion and body type.

Well-fitting men's jeans

Jeans are the most democratic piece in a man’s wardrobe — and also the one where the cut goes wrong most often. Getting the right cut and wash transforms the look (and the comfort).

The cuts

  • Skinny: very tight. Out of fashion; hard to wear well.
  • Slim: fitted but comfortable. The most versatile bet today.
  • Straight: a timeless classic that suits almost everyone.
  • Wide/loose: a more fashion-forward trend; it demands the rest of the look be on point.

For most men, slim or straight are the safest and most elegant choices.

The right wash for each occasion

  • Dark blue / raw: the most elegant and versatile. It even works for smart casual.
  • Medium blue: a classic everyday casual.
  • Light / faded: more relaxed, better for leisure.
  • Black: modern and easy to combine; great for the evening.

Golden tip: a dark blue straight or slim pair, without rips, is the most versatile — it goes from casual work to the weekend.

Fit: what to watch for

  1. Waist in the right place (neither sagging nor too high).
  2. Length without excess fabric at the hem (a slight “break” is enough).
  3. Thigh and leg fitted, but comfortable enough to sit and walk.

Care that extends their life

  • Wash inside out, in cold water and infrequently (jeans don’t need washing after every wear).
  • Avoid the dryer — it preserves color and fit.

With the right cut and wash, jeans stop being “just a pair of pants” and become the base of elegant looks for any occasion.
