Essential men's shoes: the 5 styles every man should own

White sneaker, loafer, dress shoe and more: the essential men's footwear to build any look, from casual to formal.

“You can tell a man by his shoes.” The saying is old, but still true: the right footwear finishes the look — and the wrong one ruins even the best outfit. Here are the five essential styles that cover practically every occasion.

1. Minimalist white leather sneaker

The wildcard of the modern wardrobe. It pairs with jeans, light tailoring and shorts. Choose a plain model, without prints, in leather — it ages much better than fabric ones.

2. Loafer

Elegance without laces. The loafer moves from smart casual to light dress wear, with or without socks. In brown or black leather, it’s one of the most versatile pieces there is.

3. Oxford or Derby dress shoe

Indispensable for formal occasions — work, weddings, events. Black for the most formal; brown for a more modern and versatile touch.

4. Chelsea boot

Style with personality. The Chelsea boot (with elastic side panels) elevates fall/winter looks and pairs with jeans and tailored trousers. In suede, it looks even more elegant.

5. Neutral casual sneaker

For more relaxed everyday wear, a comfortable sneaker in a neutral tone (gray, beige, navy) completes the base.

Care that makes them last

  • Use a shoehorn and rotate your pairs (don’t wear the same two days in a row).
  • Clean and condition the leather regularly.
  • Invest in quality soles — good shoes can be resoled for years.

Pairing rule: the tone of the shoe should match the belt. Brown shoes, brown belt; black shoes, black belt.

With these five pairs, you’re covered from the office to the weekend — always well shod.
